  • one 50-foot 3/8-inch manila or nylon rope per every six to eight conference participants
  • one bow saw per every six to eight conference participants
  • one pair of protective work gloves per every six to eight conference participants
  • one 3-foot x 2 to 3-inch length of dry fuel wood per every six to eight conference participants
  • one pair of protective eyewear per every six to eight conference participants
  • one sharpened hand ax (hatchet) with sheath per every six to eight conference participants
  • one sharp knife per every six to eight conference participants
  • one 9-inch x 2-inch stick per conference participant
  • one 9-inch x 1-inch stick per six to eight conference participants
  • one small chopping block per every six to eight conference participants
  • length of binder twine taped between fire place walls, 10 inches high, per every six to eight conference participants

8:20-8:30 — Gathering Period: play Rope Toss.

8:30-9:00 — Discussion: Besides sequential programming, where each building block is put into action, what else can we do to plan a program that rocks?  Elicit ideas and opinions and write them on the board. Distribute copies of Comprehensive Programming, and have attendees take turns reading sections aloud. Open floor to discussion. Tomorrow morning, please be ready to share an example of comprehensive programming that you’ve either dreamed up or experienced.

9:00-9:05 — Explain and Demonstrate: View: Using a Camp Saw

9:05-9:30 — Activity: Bow Saw Relay Crew members should gather around the individual handling the saw to coach and support them.

9:35-9:40 — Explain and Demonstrate: Contact Method to prepare kindling / Using a Knife to Prepare Tinder,  View: Using a Hand Ax and Knife.

9:45-10:15 — Activity: Wood Splitting Relay

10:15-10:30 — Activity: Fuzz Stick Relay

10:40-10:45 — Explain and Demonstrate:View Lighting and Feeding a Fire.

10:50-11:20 — Main Event: Supreme String Burning Race

Tuesday p.m.

  • three Scout staves per every two conference participant
  • one 6-foot manila lashing rope (properly whipped) per every two conference participants
  • one 10-foot manila lashing rope (properly whipped) per every two conference participants
  • three 8-foot x 4-inch spars per every six to eight conference participants
  • three 6-foot x 3-inch spars per every six to eight conference participants
  • four 4-foot x 2-inch floor spars per every six to eight conference participants
  • eight 15-foot x 1/4-inch manila lashing ropes (properly whipped) per every six to eight conference participants
  • ready for projection: How to Tie a Mark II Square Lashing / Chippewa Kitchen / How to Tie a Tripod Lashing with Plain Turns / Everyone on the Tripod Demonstration

1:20-1:30 — Discussion: This is our second afternoon. At this juncture, what are some of your thoughts regarding how to plan, prepare, and present a program that rocks.  Open floor to discussion.

1:30-2:00 — Illustration: Go online and project the agenda section of Troop Leader Resources and provide an online tour highlighting the group instruction and games sections.

2:00-2:10 — Explain and Demonstrate: Distribute a Scout stave to each participant, and a 6-foot lashing rope to every two participants. View: How to Tie a Mark II Square Lashing.

2:20-2:30 — Guide and Enable: Participants pair up and take turns tying Mark II Square Lashings. Provide guidance as needed.

2:30-2:50 — Activity: Ladder Building

2:50-3:15 — Discussion: So…what is sequential programming? View: Chippewa Kitchen. What skills come into play here? In presenting these skills in a sequence, what’s the key to making the meetings fun?

3:15-3:20 — Explain and Demonstrate: View: How to Tie a Tripod Lashing with Plain Turns

3:20-3:35 — Guide and Enable: Attendees pair up and tie tripod lashings using three Scout staves and a 10-foot lashing rope. Provide guidance as needed.

3:35-4:05 — Activity: First, view: Everyone on the Tripod Demonstration, then crews compete in Everyone on the Tripod.  Note: Have crews lash on the 6-foot cross brace, between the two outer legs, so that the center of the length is 3-feet from the ground.

4:05-4:20 — Activity: Set aside two of the most tightly-assembled tripods for tomorrow, assuring the two cross pieces that will face one another are lashed on the same distance from the bottom. Reveal how this fits into tomorrow’s plans. (The cross pieces will support the lateral spars that serve as the framework for the cooking platform.)
